New Directions

I keep being told that I'm enjoying an unusually warm winter out here at the moment.  Is it an El Nina instead of El Nino year?  Maybe it's global warming?  Or perhaps just a fluke shift in weather pattens?  Whatever the reason, I'm not complaining... I can't remember a weekend that hasn't been full of blue skies, sunshine and temperatures around the 20-23 degrees range!  Actually that's not true, I can remember a weekend where I had to get to Balmain with a suitcase in torrential rain, but that was 3 months ago when I first started my job!

In the UK I used to wake up on the weekend and if the weather was good I'd be straight out the door, making the most of it.  I always thought that was because for one good weekend you could get a series of 'bad' ones (wet, cold, grey, or all of the above), but since coming over here I'm doubting that theory.  As I just stated, I've experienced pretty amazing weather over the past 3 months, yet I still wake up and head out to enjoy it when the weather's good!  Is that because I haven't yet changed my habits (I thought it only took 3 weeks to form a new habit?) or because it's actually who I am... I just love being outside and doing rather than inside doing housework, ironing, tax returns, etc!!  Is this something I should bear in mind for the future as I start thinking about what I want to do as I get older... I'm not sure I want to be sat in an office at a desk for the next 20-30 years!  Should I be considering something outdoors as a future career?  It certainly wouldn't be new... I used to work outdoors as a Watersports instructor and it certainly had it's upsides, but no fewer downsides than working indoors.

At the moment I'm contemplating a couple of ideas for moving my career in a new direction.  The first of those is massage.  I've always enjoyed using my hands to manipulate muscles and relieve pain in family members, so I've thought for a while that this might be an interesting new career.  In fact the idea has been brewing for a long while and the only reason I didn't progress anything in the UK was because I knew they required different qualifications out here.  I think one of the other things that attracts me to this idea is it's proximity to physiotherapy which has been a huge interest of mine since I worked with the physios at Spurs FC in the days of Gary Lineker and Paul 'Gazza' Gascoigne (before he descended into the depths of obesity, drunkenness and abuse).

The second idea is wine... as my friends will attest, it's definitely an interest of mine and I never miss an opportunity to sample fresh delights!!  Whereas massage would see me completely changing direction to become a hands-on practitioner, wine is more of an idea relating to extending what I do now into a business area that truly interests me.

They are two very different ideas - with the first I can clearly visualise setting up my own business, possibly opening an establishment that could offer a range of therapies to both pamper and heal.  The second could ultimately be my own business, but it would be a far more ambitious plan - making wine is a notoriously difficult industry (despite it's blossoming success on this side of the planet) that requires years of dedication as well as luck and good fortune.  Now if only my belongings had arrived, I could head home, put on A Good Year and let my dreams start taking form!!
